Natural Connections – Cumbernauld’s Going Wild

Last Saturday we had a fantastic day ‘Going Wild’ at St Maurice’s Pond to help celebrate National Meadow’s Day.  The weather held dry for us and lots of families came along and helped us to have fun exploring the flowers and pollinators on the site.  We learned how wildflower meadows help butterflies and bumblebees and went out looking for these amazing creatures along our special butterfly trail through the new heritage orchard that volunteers established here last year.

After we’d found all the butterflies – with the help of our friends from TCV and Butterfly Conservation – we made fantastic native wildflower seedbombs to catapult on to the meadows and ensure that there would be flowers and nectar here to help feed pollinating insects for years to come.  We rounded the afternoon off with a pond dip, finding all sorts of weird and mysterious creatures like newts, frogs and dragonfly larvae making their home in the pond.

It was great to be able to meet so many people and help them to discover how fabulous meadows and pollinators can be – but there are wildflower meadows all over Cumbernauld that you can go visit yourself, you don’t need our help!  As well as St Maurice’s Pond, sites like Cumbernauld Glen, Ravenswood Local Nature Reserve and Seafar Woods have amazing wildflower meadows that are full of beautiful flowers and incredible butterflies and bumblebees.  Why not head out to one and see what you can discover?  Let us know what you find on the Cumbernauld Living Landscape Facebook page.
