Natural Connections – Get involved in Beautiful Cumbernauld

Enjoying the wonder of a wildflower meadow Louise and I were delighted to represent Cumbernauld at the Keep Scotland Beautiful Awards held in Aberdeen last week. This is an annual award for towns and communities to recognise the work that groups and volunteers do to improve their spaces and they are an inspiring bunch.  Thanks and well done to everyone who helped with this year’s entry. Cumbernauld won silver for the third year but after getting some tips and trade secrets from the judges I know that with a bit more work and more people involved we can win gold next year.

Natural Connections – Small coppers seen in Cumbernauld

Small coppers? - Police Scotland Youth Volunteers and local volunteers  Normally when we are talking about small coppers we mean butterflies, this time we mean business. During the summer our regular volunteers fall away due to family commitments, holidays and a chance to get out and enjoy the brief glimpses of sunshine we get here in Scotland.  However, this summer we have had a boost in numbers thanks to the lads and lassies of the Police Scotland Youth Volunteers. These volunteers are local teenagers who are taking part in a two year programme with Police Scotland to build up work experience, boost their confidence and become responsible members of our community.

Wildlife Watch pop-up events 2016

Getting to grips with nature As we get closer to the start date for the new Wildlife Watch Group in Cumbernauld we thought it would be a great idea to host a few Pop-Up events showcasing the kinds of activities that will be taking place during the Wildlife Watch Group itself. The wonderful staff at Palacerigg Country Park, where the Wildlife Watch group will be held, allowed us to set up four activity sessions in the Eriskay Longhouse. The wonderful volunteers here at Cumbernauld Living Landscape led the sessions which took place on the 28th of July and the 3rd, 9th and 11th of August in the run up to the schools starting again. 

The importance of wildlife monitoring

This month saw a bit of a change with the Sunday Nature Ninja Volunteers, instead of having a good old rummage in the woodlands for litter or fixing paths the Ninjas were learning about wildlife recording. At first everyone was very keen and then a bit later, someone commented that they were finding it boring!  Paul and Louise got them geared up for some environmental art and you can see their brilliant creations on our Facebook page.

Going Wild with Dragons at St Maurice's Pond

The first weekend in July was a wild one for the Natural Connections team, on Saturday we were Going Wild with Dragons at St Maurice’s Pond and on Sunday we went for a Wild Walk through Cumbernauld Glen with our regular volunteering group.  

Celebrating Living Landscapes at Gardening Scotland

The Gardening Scotland Living Landscape team Last weekend Cumbernauld Living Landscape along with the Edinburgh and Coigach-Assynt Living Landscapes had the pleasure of hosting several stalls at Gardening Scotland at the Ingliston Royal Highland Centre.  We were situated in the Living Garden exhibit alongside the wonderful One Planet Picnic Pocket Gardens designed and built by Eco School students throughout Scotland.

Natural Connections – Planting for the community

The Conservation Volunteers - protecting the trees from deer Very excited to tell you that last Thursday the Tesco, Bags Of Help project at St Maurice’s Pond began.  The Cumbernauld Living Landscape has contracted The Conservation Volunteers to come out to plant the small community orchard and to improve the boardwalk that take you across the pond.
